An overnight fire at the Gala Vista apartments on Government Street in Duncan, British Columbia, left two people dead and displaced roughly 100 residents. "Everybody's in shock right now," Staples said. "People are exhausted".
This tragedy marks the second major fire involving an affordable housing site in Duncan within a single month, compounding local anxieties about housing security and building safety.
Emergency Management Cowichan and Cowichan Support Services swiftly established a reception centre to offer 10 days of emergency support to those locked out of their apartments. Local businesses stepped up immediately. The nearby Fishbowl Cafe closed its doors to the general public to function as an impromptu hub for emergency responders and displaced families, while community members poured in with donations of food, clothing, and blankets.
